Just over a year after the last parliamentary session was held to elect a president, during which Gebran Bassil’s Free Patriotic Movement and the opposition “converged” on the candidacy of former Finance Minister Jihad Azour, “the honeymoon period” between the two sides seems to be replaced by a serious crisis of confidence. This crisis erupted while Bassil was repositioning and imposing himself as key in breaking the electoral deadlock, multiplying his moves of openness toward Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, not to mention the occasional nods to Hezbollah.Bassil even said he was in favor of a dialogue on the presidential election, as Berri has been calling for, even if it had to be held without the Lebanese Forces (LF), who are opposed to it, as is the rest of the opposition.
