BEIRUT — Lebanese Army Commander Joseph Aoun visited the caretaker defense minister, Maurice Slim, in the latter's office in Yarzeh on Tuesday for the occasion of Christmas, according to state-run National News Agency.
On Dec. 19, the caretaker government confirmed the extension of Aoun's term as voted by Parliament on Dec. 15.
Aoun and Slim have a tense relationship due to the fact that the latter is close to the Free Patriotic Movement and the party has repeatedly voiced its opposition to the extension of the army commander, whose name is regularly mentioned as a potential presidential candidate.
The tensions between Slim and Aoun peaked last January, around the appointment of the army's new inspector general.
