BEIRUT — Lebanon on Thursday will abstain from the UN General Assembly vote on setting up an international institution to focus on the issue of the missing and disappeared in Syria, Lebanon's Foreign Ministry confirmed to L'Orient Today.

On Thursday, the UN General Assembly is set to meet and vote on the formation of an international institution focused on missing and disappeared persons in Syria. Tens of thousands of individuals went missing after the Syrian civil war which started in 2011.

The institution's mandate would not be limited to Syrian citizens. Lebanese citizens are among those who went missing in Syria, especially during Lebanon's period of Syrian occupation (1978-2005).
