BEIRUT — A father allegedly shot his 30-year-old pregnant daughter three times in Tripoli Monday evening, hitting her in the shoulder, back and stomach, L'Orient Today's correspondent reported, citing eyewitnesses.

A doctor, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, and who works at the Nini Hospital in Tripoli, where the victim was admitted, confirmed the incident.

The young woman, who is in her sixth or seventh month of pregnancy, was in stable condition but suffering psychological distress, the doctor said. She is currently in the intensive care unit at the hospital, while her baby is reportedly doing well.

The alleged shooter remains on the run, according to the doctor.

The shooting took place in front of the Tripoli Serail following a family dispute whose circumstances are still unclear. Rescue teams transported the woman to the hospital afterward.

"She was shot several times in different parts of the body, her left hand was injured and fractured, and her small intestine was wounded and operated on," the doctor explained.

"However, the baby is in good health," she added. "We will be waiting 48 hours before we can be sure that the woman will not have complications."

The facility has security measures in place to protect the patient, the doctor also said. "Two members of hospital security are positioned outside the door of the intensive care unit."

The Internal Security Forces (ISF) and Lebanese Army were not immediately available to comment.

The president of the Federation of Municipalities in Tripoli, Ahmad Amareddine, said he was not aware of the incident.

This tragedy is one more in a series of recent cases of violence against women in Lebanon.

In February, a retired ISF member killed his ex-wife with a shotgun on a Tripoli street. In March, a man also shot his 40-year-old daughter in South Lebanon, in the Marjeyoun area, after trying to run her over with his car. In the same month, a man murdered his 26-year-old wife and fled with her two children.
