Catholic schools opt for tuition in liras, extra ‘contributions’ in fresh dollars

The creation of a relief fund will make it possible for schools to pay part of the teachers’ salaries in fresh dollars, feed the aid funds for the underprivileged pupils and cover operating costs, Lebanon’s head of Catholic schools, Father Youssef Nasr, told L’Orient-Le Jour.

Tuition fees in private Catholic schools in Lebanon will not be dollarized this year. They will be charged in Lebanese lira, in accordance with the law regulating the private education sector in Lebanon.But in return, parents will have to pay a lump sum in fresh dollars, in order to allow schools to pay their bills and to pay teachers decent salaries, part of which will be made in fresh dollars. Less privileged families will be able to benefit from scholarships and social aid.
