ELECTIONS 2022

Two opposition lists withdraw from North I and Bekaa II

BEIRUT — Two opposition lists withdrew from the electoral race on Thursday evening, in the Bekaa II and North I (Akkar) districts.

Here’s what we know:

    • In the Bekaa II constituency, the "Towards Change" list, which includes Kataeb and independent candidates, withdrew from the parliamentary election through a statement, and said it was "confident that the voice of the Lebanese will be raised for change.” This leaves two opposition lists of groups still running in the constituency, “Capable” (Qadreen) and "Sahlouna Wal Jabal.”

    • In the North I constituency, particularly Akkar, the list "Akkar revolts," supported by groups close to the Oct. 17 uprisings, has also been withdrawn, in favor of the opposition list “Akkar for Change,” according to local TV channel MTV.

    • The deadline for the registration of the lists has expired on April 4 which makes the withdrawal legally symbolic.

    • Several candidates have withdrawn from the elections in the last few weeks, including independent candidates, Lebanese Forces candidates, and Beirut Madinati’s list in the Beirut II constituency.
