Grand Mufti’s term extension: Berri comes to Derian’s defense
The parliament speaker said the “grand mufti office belongs to all Muslims and all Lebanese” after the Council of Muftis denounced the extension as a “malicious campaign.”
Lebanon’s Council of Muftis came to the defense of Grand Mufti Abdellatif Derian on Thursday, responding to a recent report by the State Shura Council Judge Rania Abou Zein recommending that a decision by the Higher Islamic Council be overturned. Adopted on Sept. 9, 2023, the decision raised the retirement age of the grand mufti from 72 to 76.Derian was 70 at the time, meaning the decision effectively extended his term by four years.
