Israel is "at risk of civil war or state collapse," according to a classified document from the U.S. intelligence agency CIA dated August and cited by investigative outlet Drop Site News. The study, which the media reported was produced by the CIA and described by two American sources, highlights political, economic, and social fractures within Israel that could lead to internal conflict. The document's authenticity could not be independently verified.
The report, titled "Fracture from Within," says Israel faces increasing international isolation, marked in particular by waning U.S. support. Israeli officials themselves reportedly view this development as a long-term threat. The report also says Israel's gradual transformation into a "pariah state" could contribute to the country's collapse.
The CIA also reportedly describes an "explosive cocktail" of tensions ahead of Israel's Oct. 27 elections, including an economic crisis and soaring military spending; the return of heavily armed veterans after prolonged combat, many of whom suffer from severe psychological trauma; growing anger over military service exemptions for the ultra-Orthodox community; escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank; and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's efforts to remain in power.
The report also reads that a "large part of the opposition to Netanyahu does not contest Israel's brutality toward the Palestinians, but is outraged by how he has handled the situation." According to Drop Site News, the main Zionist parties opposed to Netanyahu remain divided over leadership, while one of the main lines of attack against the prime minister concerns his responsibility for the security failures of Oct. 7. Drop Site News has frequently published coverage critical of Israel.
On the economy and the consequences of the war, the study states Israeli households are bearing the cost of the country's security policies. Food prices have reached historic highs, with the cost of food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, rising 9.5% in two years, worsening an already severe cost-of-living crisis after years of war, the report says.
Israel's war on Gaza after Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack has killed 74,200 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Its ensuing war on Lebanon, triggered by Hezbollah's support front on Oct. 8, 2023, reached a cease-fire on Nov. 27, 2024. During that time frame, renewed fighting in March 2026, Israel has killed nearly 9,000 people in Lebanon and is occupying more than 600 square kilometers of southern Lebanon.
