The new plan proposed by Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days was developed ‘‘in coordination’’ with the supreme leader and will be implemented ‘‘without issue’’ if the United States agrees, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said.
‘‘Coordination with the leader of the Revolution,’’ Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, ‘‘has been carried out,’’ Pezeshkian said in an interview with CBS broadcast Saturday by the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
’’If the United States accepts the Iranian plan and fulfills its obligations, we will do the same, and there will be no problem in this regard,’’ he said.
Pezeshkian added that a six-member team, ‘‘composed of representatives from various organizations and bodies, including the army, Parliament and the government,’’ had been created.
The team ‘‘meets to discuss the matters at stake and has the authority to make decisions,’’ said Pezeshkian, who concluded a week of diplomatic negotiations Friday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
It was in this context that Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, submitted a new proposal to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for global oil and gas trade.
Traffic through the strait has been disrupted since the start of the war, which began at the end of February with Israeli-American strikes on Iran. The disruption has caused oil prices to soar and shaken the global economy.
While awaiting an official U.S. response, The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported Friday that President Donald Trump had rejected the offer.
According to Araghchi, the conditions set by Iran are the same as those already included in a memorandum of understanding signed in June with Washington to bring a lasting end to the conflict.
The agreement, which collapsed in July, notably called for an end to hostilities on all fronts, the release of Iranian assets frozen shortly after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and the lifting of U.S. sanctions that have constrained the country’s economy.
