Bassil opens new battle against Salam government

Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader Gebran Bassil wants to establish himself as the sole opposition figure to the Nawaf Salam government. To that end, he launched a (new) political battle against the prime minister and his team on Tuesday. The Batroun MP, who never misses an opportunity to criticize the government, once again threatened to call for a vote of confidence, an attempt he had already made in July 2025, without success. But he may end up fighting this battle alone. The overwhelming majority of political actors, including Hezbollah, believe the government must remain in place as the drums of war beat in southern Lebanon.
