Israeli strikes on Gaza killed two people Saturday and heavily damaged medical supply warehouses at a hospital, according to hospitals and local authorities.
The strikes came after U.S. President Donald Trump and Hamas announced an agreement to end the war, though Israel has not officially confirmed the deal. The agreement calls for an end to military operations and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces in exchange for the disarmament of the militant group.
One person was killed and several others were wounded in a strike on Gaza City, according to al-Shifa Hospital, which received the casualties. The Israeli military told AFP the strike targeted ‘’a Hamas terrorist’’ in the area.
In Deir al-Balah, in central Gaza, another strike killed one person, according to al-Aqsa Hospital, which received the body. The Israeli military also said it had targeted a Hamas member there.
A third strike hit a medical supply warehouse at al-Aqsa Hospital, causing extensive damage, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The strike also damaged a neighboring outpatient clinic, the ministry said.
’’Vital quantities of goods and medical supplies intended for patients are unusable or destroyed,’’ the ministry said.
AFP images from the scene showed a large crater and people searching through debris among what appeared to be medical supplies. The Israeli military said it was ‘’looking into’’ the incident.
’’I hope the war really ends so we can live like human beings,’’ said Jaber Abed, who fled his tent at dawn after the strike. His tent was located next to the hospital.
’’The ball is in Israel’s court,’’ Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, told AFP on Saturday, urging mediators ‘’to put pressure on Israel to stop violating the cease-fire.’’
Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire that has been in place since October, while Israeli strikes on the territory have continued.
Since October, at least 1,222 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, whose casualty figures the United Nations considers reliable.
The Israeli military says five soldiers and one civilian contractor have been killed in the Gaza Strip during the same period.
Media restrictions and limited access to the Gaza Strip prevent AFP from independently verifying casualty figures or freely reporting on the violence on the ground.
