Elyas Abu Safiya: ‘How can anyone accept that their father is tortured, humiliated, and held in Israel without ever being charged ?’
Imprisoned in Israel for the past year and a half, Gaza pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya reportedly told his lawyer during a recent prison visit that he fears for his life. His son speaks to L’Orient-Le Jour.

Elyas, 28, has not seen his father since his arrest in Gaza on Dec. 27, 2024.Only fragments of information, relayed through Hussam Abu Safiya’s lawyer, have reached him. Family visits remain prohibited. On July 2, that fragile lifeline brought devastating news.According to his lawyer, the doctor, who has reportedly lost nearly 30 kilograms in detention and been weakened by torture, said: "This is the last time you will see me. They brought me here to kill me.
