On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, President Joseph Aoun sent a letter Saturday to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to maintain his support for Lebanon to help ‘’turn the page on wars.’’
’’The history of relations between Lebanon and the United States is long and deeply rooted, reflecting the human and social principles and values that have united their visions. Today, this relationship is regaining its strength thanks to your determination and tireless efforts to restore stability and security in the Middle East in general, and Lebanon in particular,’’ Aoun wrote.
‘’We invite you to continue standing alongside Lebanon’s legitimate and just causes, its institutions, its army and its people, so that we may turn the page on wars, tragedies and suffering, and open a new one marked by hope, peace and stability,’’ he added.
A ‘better future’
The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon said Saturday in a post on X that ‘’it is with great pride that [Washington] stands with the Lebanese people as they build a better future.’’
’’This year, as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence, we celebrate not only the founding principles that define us, but also the lasting friendships that have shaped our nation’s history,’’ it said.
The embassy added that it stands ‘’with the Lebanese people as they build a better future, a future of peace, prosperity and promise that has been waited for far too long.’’
Nearly four months after the resumption of war between Israel and Hezbollah, Beirut and Tel Aviv reached a framework agreement in Washington on June 26, despite Hezbollah’s opposition.
