French diplomat Jean Arnault will take over as acting head of the United Nations Special Coordinator’s Office for Lebanon on July 1, following the departure of diplomat Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert. The interim appointment of a seasoned negotiator reflects U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ intent to maintain a strong political presence in Lebanon at a time when the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and regional stability remain fragile. U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced the decision during his daily briefing at U.N. headquarters.
