White phosphorus in southern Lebanon: Immediate damage, uncertain long-term impact

The weapon has been used extensively by Israel since October 2023. According to Lebanon’s National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS), no fewer than 173 hectares of land were set ablaze by white phosphorus strikes in 2026.

Israel’s use of white phosphorus munitions in southern Lebanon has been documented since the 2024 war, as well as in earlier wars.
