BEIRUT — Gunfire took place in the Palestinian camp of Ain al-Hilweh near Saida on Monday between Fatah and Islamists, leading killing civilian Abu Yasser Asem Hreish, our correspondent in the south reports.
Following the gunfire, which took place in the Safsaf neighborhood, a cautious calm prevails in the camp, with the Joint Security Committee monitoring the situation to restore control inside the camp.
According to our correspondent the gunfire took place during the funeral of a Palestinian security officer and his colleague who were killed in the same camp on Sunday.
On Sunday, the head of information and public relations for the Palestinian security forces, Abdel Hadi al-Assadi, said that the "killing bears Israeli fingerprints," without elaborating further.
The largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, Ain al-Hilweh, is often the scene of armed incidents between rival Palestinian factions. These developments come against the broader backdrop of the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
According to the latest tally from the health ministry, Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,798 people, and injured 11,781 others since March 2.
Last year, Lebanese authorities launched a disarmament process for the Palestinian camps. While some factions, including Fatah, surrendered part of their weapons, groups affiliated with Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have so far resisted. At least seven of Lebanon’s 12 Palestinian camps are now fully under state control.
