Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati opted for Syria to make his political comeback, more than a year after the end of his term.The Tripoli billionaire visited Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Monday, marking the second meeting between the two men. Their first meeting took place a few days after Syria’s new strongman came to power, when Mikati was still serving as prime minister. This latest meeting came amid Sharaa’s growing popularity among Lebanese Sunni circles, particularly in Tripoli.Mikati has thus become the first Lebanese Sunni political leader, other than Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, to be received in the “new Syria.”“The meeting had been scheduled several weeks earlier,” a source close to Mikati told L’Orient-Le Jour, and urged “to not over-interpret” the meeting.
