President Joseph Aoun was clear.“The blood of the army’s and security forces’ martyrs will not be subject to compromise under any circumstances,” Aoun declared Tuesday before the families of soldiers killed during the June 2013 Abra battle, which pitted the Lebanese Army against fighters linked to the Salafist cleric Ahmad al-Assir.Aoun’s remarks came amid renewed debate over a proposed general amnesty law that could lead to the release of Islamist detainees accused of killing soldiers.Deep political disagreements, unfolding against a backdrop of sectarian tensions, have so far complicated efforts to pass the bill, to the point that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri postponed indefinitely a planned legislative session on the matter.
