On their Facebook page, the Green Southerners, an environmental protection association mainly based in southern Lebanon, posted on May 13 a photo of a small mammal, the rock hyrax, whose many colonies have been recorded in this region. "We helplessly witnessed the detonation by the Israeli army of an entire neighborhood in Bayyada, Naqoura (Sour), where we know that about twenty colonies of hyraxes reside," says Hisham Younes, president of the association, to L’Orient-Le Jour.The rock hyrax is a typical example of these small mammals, closely dependent on their immediate environment, living in a well-defined social structure in rocky cavities.
