At the UN Security Council, Lebanon’s future hangs between war and diplomacy
Despite apparent divisions over who's to blame for the war on Lebanon, many speakers emphasized the importance of keeping the window for negotiations open.

Meeting urgently at France’s request, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) spent several hours Monday discussing Israel's escalated attacks on Lebanon, including the advances of Israeli forces north of the Litani River and their deadly bombardments in the South and the Bekaa. They also discussed Hezbollah's ongoing attacks on northern Israel, which have multiplied in recent days. While the debates revealed deep divisions over who's responsible for this war, one conviction nonetheless emerged: the future of Lebanon, the reconstruction of the Lebanese state, and the strengthening of its institutions are now at the heart of any prospect for lasting peace.
