BEIRUT — The former Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) leader, Walid Joumblatt, on Monday called for preserving "internal unity" following a meeting with Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri.
"Beyond the grand analyses of self-proclaimed experts and strategic analysts, what remains essential is internal unity, both in times of peace and in times of war," he said.
"Since prospects for a cease-fire are still distant, I share the view of Berri and all Lebanese: we must improve the living conditions of the displaced, ensure a dignified life for our fellow citizens in the South, mobilize the resources of the state and international financing organizations, and show patience," he added. "We have already gone through difficult times. In my view, we will overcome this ordeal, no matter how long it lasts."
In an interview given Monday to L'Orient-Le Jour, Berri stressed the need to preserve the government and reject calls for its overthrow. He also underlined the importance of improving relations among all political forces and components, as well as the need to establish a unified Lebanese position.
Berri further said that he personally guarantees Hezbollah's full compliance with any cease-fire, provided that Israel ends the war, halts its military operations, and completely stops the destruction of homes in the South.
