Faced with stalled negotiations, Israel imposes on Lebanon a return to the pre-2000 era

Amid intense military escalation and Israel's widening advance in southern Lebanon, Lebanese-Israeli military-level negotiations were held Friday at the Pentagon under U.S. auspices, but no progress was made. Still, a new meeting is expected within the next two weeks. The positions of both sides appeared far apart, with lingering tensions marking the talks. The Lebanese delegation maintained its demands for a cease-fire, a halt to Israeli forced evacuation orders, and an Israeli withdrawal. The Israeli side fully rejected those demands, insisting on continuing its attacks and maintaining its occupation in the South until Hezbollah is disarmed.
