The U.S. president's hesitation between a return to war or a definitive end to it drove him to intensify contacts with regional leaders, as well as with Netanyahu.

A 'disoriented' Trump reshuffles the deck in the Middle East

Like a drone trapped in a "web," U.S. President Donald Trump appears trapped in a slow, grinding process — except, a drone, can still explode even after being caught. Maybe a more appropriate comparison would be to a drowning swimmer thrashing violently against waves to avoid sinking. That may be the best image to describe the American president's current position on the war with Iran and the negotiations process underway. Trump appears neither willing nor fully prepared to plunge into another all-out war, yet he could still find himself dragged into one. At the same time, he seems unable to abandon his objectives, even as circumstances push him toward negotiations that could produce what is being described as "a memorandum of understanding".
