BEIRUT — Meeting Friday at the presidential palace in Baabda, Cabinet appointed Judge Hala el-Maoula (Shia) as director general of the social affairs ministry and Wi'am Abou Hamdane (Druze) as director general of the health ministry.
The first is a compromise candidate between the Hezbollah-Amal alliance and Social Affairs Minister Hanine Sayyed. The second is backed by the Progressive Socialist Party, where he is a senior official.
The government also appointed Mazen Basbous (Sunni) as director general of land and maritime transport at the public works ministry, and Maurice Karkafi (Maronite) as the head of oil installations at the energy ministry.
