BEIRUT — In an interview with Lebanese media outlet Asas, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said there is "greater American commitment than before" to efforts aimed at consolidating the cease-fire between Lebanon and Israel.

Asked about the possibility of reciprocal security measures, including an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese Army in evacuated areas, Salam said that "this idea is on the table but has not yet been finalized."

Lebanon and Israel reached a U.S.-brokered cease-fire, which has been extended twice since April 17, halting the war that resumed on March 2 between Hezbollah and Israel. Israel and Hezbollah continue exchanges of fire across the Blue Line while Israeli forces occupy around 600 square kilometers in southern Lebanon in an attempt to establish a buffer zone.

Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed over 3,000 people since March 2.
