SOUTH LEBANON — The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said a projectile fired by a “non-state actor,” referring to Hezbollah, hit a building at its Naqoura headquarters in the Sour district, as Israeli forces intensify shelling and the group responds with rocket fire.

"Just before noon today, a projectile struck a building inside our headquarters. Peacekeepers specializing in demining are currently handling the incident. We believe it was fired by a non-state actor," said UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel in a statement.

"Over the past 48 hours, peacekeepers have recorded heavy gunfire and intense explosions in and around Naqoura, near the UNIFIL headquarters. Bullets, fragments and shell splinters have hit buildings and open areas inside our base, endangering peacekeepers. As a result, they have been forced to remain in shelters," the statement said.

This is the second time since the start of the Israeli offensive that UNIFIL says it has come under fire from Hezbollah, which it does not name in its statement. UNIFIL had also announced an Israeli strike on a peacekeeper position on March 6, which injured members of the Ghanaian contingent.

"We reiterate that there is no military solution to this conflict and call on the parties to lay down their arms and commit to a long-term solution before more people are injured," the U.N. force's statement concluded.
