The Israeli army carried out strikes overnight from Friday to Saturday on Beirut’s southern suburbs after again calling for the evacuation of the area. The strikes come as ground fighting with Hezbollah continues. Hezbollah said it carried out 55 attacks on Friday, a record since the start of the war, particularly around the town of Khiam in Marjayoun. In this tense context, media access was banned in Jdeidet Marjayoun for security reasons.
In a brief statement, the Israeli army said overnight it was “striking targets of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Beirut,” after again issuing evacuation warnings for seven neighborhoods: Haret Hreik, Ghobeiri, Laylaki, Hadath, Burj al-Barajneh, Tahwitat al-Ghadir and Chiyah, a regular call since March 5.
Hezbollah said in a statement that at 2:05 a.m. it launched a barrage of rockets targeting the Filon base, south of Rosh Pinna, opposite the Lebanese town of Houla in Marjayoun.
Homes and businesses destroyed in Khirbet Selm
In southern Lebanon, Israeli bombardment and ground advances continued. After 10 p.m., Israeli artillery fire targeted Bint Jbeil and Aita al-Shaab in the Bint Jbeil district.
Israeli warplanes also struck several homes in the Bir al-Salasil area of Khirbet Selm, causing significant destruction to houses, businesses and vehicles and blocking roads with debris. Civil Defense teams, the Islamic Health Committee and firefighters from the Bint Jbeil Municipal Union rushed to the scene to clear rubble and reopen roads, according to a correspondent.
Israeli warplanes also struck a house on the main road between Ansar and Zrarieh, near the municipal building, but the missile did not explode.
Israeli artillery fire targeted Naqoura after 11 p.m. An airstrike also hit Kafra, while artillery fire targeted Khiam at midnight.
Injuries and one death reported
Another airstrike hit the Hoch area, where ambulances transported several wounded, according to a correspondent.
A separate strike targeted a house in Ghandourieh, killing one person and wounding two others. Israeli artillery fire also targeted the towns of Yater and Beit Lif.
After 2 a.m., a loud explosion was heard in Khiam, likely due to the demolition of homes in the eastern neighborhood. At 3 a.m., heavy artillery fire struck residential areas in Khiam.
At least 36 villages targeted
According to a correspondent, the Israeli army carried out strikes on at least 36 villages in southern Lebanon on Friday, targeting homes and buildings and causing widespread destruction. Seventeen were subjected to intense artillery bombardment throughout the day.
Hezbollah said it issued 55 military statements Friday, the highest number since March 2, reporting operations against Israeli movements along the southern border and attacks on military positions, bases and Israeli communities in northern Israel.
Media access banned in Jdeidet Marjayoun
The municipality of Jdeidet Marjayoun said Friday it was banning journalists and media from filming inside the town “to preserve public safety and that of residents.”
“The municipality also calls on citizens not to film or share any footage related to these events. Publishing or broadcasting such images from within the locality is strictly prohibited and subject to prosecution,” the statement said.
