President Joseph Aoun received Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Tuesday afternoon, with whom he "assessed the military developments and ongoing contacts aimed at finding ways to end the Israeli aggression against Lebanon," according to the presidency on X.

"They also discussed the initiative announced yesterday by President Aoun, which aims to put an end to the escalation against Lebanon," the presidency added. On Monday, the head of state had accused Hezbollah of seeking to provoke "the collapse" of Lebanon on behalf of Iran and called for "direct" negotiations with Israel to end the war.

Aoun and Salam also "discussed the measures taken by the government to address the situation of the displaced and meet the needs of the Lebanese during this sensitive period."

Israel has been heavily bombing Lebanon since Hezbollah drew the country into the regional war with Iran on March 2 by launching missiles toward Israel. Israeli strikes have since killed nearly 400 people and displaced half a million others.
