Lebanese Forces (LF) leader Samir Geagea on Thursday declined an invitation from his main Christian rival, Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader Gebran Bassil, to take part in a televised debate, just minutes after the Batroun MP posted the proposal on X.The move came as little surprise from Geagea, at a time when traditional Christian rivalries are set to intensify ahead of parliamentary elections.This time, however, Geagea opted for an unusually sharp verbal escalation, accusing his opponent of being the “president of the university of scams.” The jab played out against the backdrop of a long-running standoff over the Energy Ministry, now held by the LF, after years of accusations by the party that the FPM mismanaged the sector.
