Barely 48 hours after Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri’s visit to the Presidential Palace in Baabda on Friday, channels of dialogue between President Joseph Aoun and Hezbollah were reactivated. Both sides seem willing to ease the tensions that had climaxed after the president called on Hezbollah to “show reason” by cooperating on disarmament. Both sides are working to ensure a “conducive environment” for an upcoming visit to Baabda by Hezbollah parliamentary bloc leader Mohammad Raad. This visit is all the more important at a time when the army is preparing to launch the second phase of its plan to dismantle Hezbollah’s arsenal, while the party does not seem ready to cooperate.
