Trucks not allowed on the road during Christmas and New Years, Interior Ministry announces

BEIRUT — Interio Minister Ahmad Hajjar signed a ministerial decree Monday banning trucks from Lebanon's roads during Christmas and New Years, amid heavy traffic since the beginning of the month. Lebanon's roads are regularly clogged during holiday periods, straining already poor road infrastructure.

The circulation of trucks is prohibited from 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24 until 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 25, and from 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 until 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, a statement from the state-run National News Agency explains.

Exempt from this measure are military vehicles; vehicles belonging to the fire department and Civil Defense; vehicles of the Lebanese and International Red Cross; as well as fuel and gas tankers, water transport trucks, trucks transporting grains, wheat, corn, barley and flour, trucks transporting livestock entering through the Port of Beirut, garbage collection trucks, and refrigerated trucks and containers transporting agricultural products such as fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, medicines and drinking water.

According to the NNA, the decision was made on the recommendation of the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces and out of concern for public safety and public order."

On Wednesday, Hajjar announced security and traffic measures for this period during a meeting of the Central Council of Internal Security.
