Berri is the focus of a fierce campaign of pressure from both inside and outside sources; at the same time, many actors, both in Lebanon and internationally, see him as the key holder of solutions and compromise.It is perhaps for this reason that the pressure on him is increasing — the latest being the letter sent by two American members of Congress, Darin LaHood and Darrell Issa, to U.S. President Donald Trump, in which they hold him responsible for the political stalemate and for shielding Hezbollah.This is not the first time Berri has faced such pressure: there have been many campaigns in the U.S. calling for sanctions against him, though no U.S. administration has ever imposed them.
