On Thursday, the Cabinet decided to send to Parliament a draft law that will, among other things, allow Lebanese expats to vote for the candidates running in their electoral districts.

At Thursday’s meeting, chaired by President Joseph Aoun, ministers decided to send an expedited draft law to Parliament that provides for the suspension — for the 2026 elections alone — of the 2017 electoral law’s Article 112.This highly contested article limits the vote of Lebanese expats to only six seats. Suspending it would mean the diaspora votes the same as residents, for all 128 MPs. The draft also calls for the establishment of megacenters to facilitate remote voting.While the Cabinet approved amendments that Amal and Hezbollah firmly rejected, it was nonetheless keen — at least in form — not to go too far in challenging Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
