The Palestinian National Security Forces from the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp handed over a suspect wanted for the killing of Elio Abou Hanna to the Lebanese Army on Wednesday, a source within the forces told L'Orient Today.
The young man was shot and killed on Oct. 26 by a patrol officer after he inadvertently entered the camp while driving home from the Badaro neighborhood of Beirut. Seriously injured, he was taken to a hospital in the southern suburbs of Beirut, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The total number of arrests related to this case now stands at seven. According to the source within the Palestinian National Security Forces, the Lebanese Army is still waiting for the handover of three individuals, adding that the Palestinian forces are in the process of locating them in order to arrest and hand them over to the army. All ten Palestinians, including the seven already arrested and the three still at large, were at the checkpoint when the incident occurred.
Contacted by L'Orient Today, the Lebanese Army was not available for comment.
On Monday, President Joseph Aoun met with the family of the young victim and offered his condolences, stating that "the investigations conducted by the security agencies will be ongoing until the truth is revealed." The killing has sparked outrage on social media and throughout the country. It also happens to come amid calls for the disarmament of all non-state actors in Lebanon.
