Berri backed into a corner: No legislation until the electoral law is amended
Nearly 60 MPs, including former allies of Hezbollah, boycotted Tuesday’s Parliament sitting, calling for a debate on the expat vote to be added to the agenda.
After torpedoing Monday’s legislative meeting, more than 60 MPs opposed to Hezbollah once again used the lack of quorum as a means to shut down Tuesday’s meeting in protest against the refusal to put the expat vote up for debate. The Parliament shutdowns come just a few months before the legislative elections scheduled for May 2026. This move left Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri with two options: either meet the request of a majority of MPs to debate the amendment to the 2017 law in the Chamber (in order to entrench the diaspora’s right to vote for all 128 MPs, not just six); or see the legislative branch paralyzed, at a time when the international community is scrutinizing Lebanon’s economic and financial reforms.Only 50 MPs responded to Berri’s call for a plenary session to continue the debate on the items on hold since Monday’s...
