The president of the chamber of the Military Court of Cassation, John Azzi, was appointed Monday by the government to the position of head of the State Litigation Department. He succeeded Judge Helene Iskandar, who retired last January, before being temporarily replaced by Judge Claude Ghanem, deputy commissioner of the government at the Military Tribunal.
Azzi also served as an assessor within the 5th chamber of the Court of Cassation, responsible for interim measures and enforcement affairs.
Known for his professional competence, integrity, and civic commitment, the new head of the State Litigation Department was awarded the 2009 Human Rights Prize by the Foundation for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (FDHDH), a member of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH, based in Paris). Azzi also authored a book entitled "A Life at the Heart of Citizenship."
