We are at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in a Levant under Ottoman domination, a little-known period of history. Haiym is a Jew of Sephardic origin, and his family is settled in Syria. He will become the treasurer of the Mamluk plenipotentiary of Bosnian origin, Ahmad Pasha al-Jazzar. The latter, born a Christian and convert to Islam, ruled Acre with terror. Haiym Farhi is part of the minorities who must grovel to access a position and who, despite their laudatory discourse and repugnant obsequiousness, risk their lives at any moment.
