Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs send a message to multiple fronts

This is the largest wave of Israeli attacks since Nov. 27. On Thursday evening, Israel launched a series of strikes against Beirut's southern suburbs, targeting no fewer than four neighborhoods and instilling panic among the residents on the eve of Eid al-Adha holiday. The sudden escalation appears to carry messages for several recipients: Hezbollah, of course, but also the country’s “new power” — namely President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who was marking 100 days in office on Thursday.The attacks came two days after a missile was launched from southern Syria toward the Israeli-occupied Golan.
