A major fire broke out in the Sour Nature Reserve late Monday afternoon. The intervention of firefighters managed to contain it, reports our correspondent in the south.
The causes of the fire are not yet known.
The importance of this nature reserve was highlighted on Friday, May 16, during a conference titled "Illegal Constructions in the Shawakir-Jiftalique Ras el-Ain Zone, on the Border of the Sour Nature Reserve: Archaeological, Environmental, and Legal Perspectives."
Nina Zeidan, head of the specialized master's degree in natural site management at the Lebanese University, presented the ecological impacts of ongoing constructions near the Sour Nature Reserve, emphasizing the richness of this unique ecosystem, home to many rare plant and animal species that are now under threat. She warned that any disturbance, even in the distant sector, could cause irreversible damage to this fragile environment.
