Complaint against ‘Marhaba Dawleh’: Humor and the sacred still do not mix in Lebanon

“Marhaba Dawleh”  (Hello state) is a satirical TV show that, according to LBCI’s official site, addresses “the ambiguous relationship between the citizen and the state through a social and comedic lens.” It has drawn sharp criticism from Lebanon’s Christian and Muslim religious authorities. They accuse the show of making fun of the two faiths’ religious symbols.This isn’t the first time that this weekly sitcom has stirred controversy. In January 2024, following an episode that poked fun at the Internal Security Forces, the Lebanese state filed a complaint against the LBCI channel, claiming the show insulted national symbols, especially the Lebanese flag and national anthem.
