Fourteen studies published on April 7 in the scientific journal Environmental Science and Pollution Research warn about the "alarming" amount of microplastics found in rivers and streams in Europe. The studies' results are the product of the "Tara Microplastics" mission conducted in 2019, during which more than 2,700 samples were collected and analyzed from nine major European rivers over the course of seven months.It was found that a quarter of microplastics come not from waste but from industrial plastics. They can take the form of synthetic textile fibers or microparticles produced when unscrewing a water bottle cap.
