In the wake of the enforcement on April 3 of the law liberalizing commercial rents for leases signed before 1992, tenant protests occurred in Saida in the South, Tripoli in the North and in the capital Beirut, with tenant rights defense committees expressing their rejection of the law. Owners, on the other hand, are rejoicing over the publication of this law in the Official Journal, blocked by the government of former Prime Minister Najib Mikati in December 2023.Contacted by L’Orient-Le Jour, Sharbel Sherfan, one of the five lawyers who presented the appeal before the State Council to annul the decision of the Mikati government, explained that this law came into effect immediately on April 3 and does not have a retroactive effect from the date of promulgation of the law in December 2023.The text is a blessing for owners of commercial...
