Baalbeck festival returns to hold its ground

Despite looming danger in the region, Baalbeck's International Festival promised a new production of "Carmen" in the Bacchus temple and a vibrant concert by Hiba Tawaji.

The Baalbeck International Festival announces a 2025 edition with a new production of Bizet's opera, "Carmen," and a grand concert by Hiba Tawaji. It is an ambitious artistic gamble in crisis-stricken Lebanon but also an ode to the will of a people and the timeless magic of Baalbeck's stones."Pillars for eternity" is the theme chosen by Nayla de Freige, president of the Baalbeck Festival, to embody this symbolic edition. In the face of recent threats in the region, especially the Israeli bombings of November 2024, an unprecedented international mobilization emerged to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage jewel. Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Michel Jarre, Roberto Bolle and other cultural figures signed the "Call to international conscience" to save Baalbeck.
