The office of Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri has denied in a statement relayed by the state-run National News Agency (NNA) "the information published by a website" indicating that he is "working" on forming lists of candidates in Beirut ahead of the municipal elections.
"This information is false, and Tarek Mitri does not interfere in the elections," the statement read.
The statement comes after website Lebanon Debate claimed to have information that "Prime Minister Nawaf Salam had tasked Tarek Mitri with coordinating with [former Prime Minister] Fouad Siniora to form an electoral list in Beirut, in cooperation with Change MPs."
If held as planned, the upcoming municipal elections are expected to take place before May 31, 2025, in accordance with the postponement law passed last year.
