Aoun and Berri compromise on Thursday's military and security appointments
Hassan Choucair is expected to be appointed director of General Security, while Nabih Berri's candidate is set to become deputy director general of State Security.

The process for military and security appointments has begun following a meeting Tuesday in Baabda Presidential Palace between President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, two days ahead of the Cabinet meeting at the presidential palace. A compromise has been reached on the future director of General Security (GS), a position traditionally allocated to the Shiite community and in which Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri typically has influence. After arduous negotiations, Berri ultimately approved the appointment of Hassan Choucair as head of GS, overriding his initial candidate, Mershed Sleiman, whose nomination faced "reservations" from the president.
