The Lebanese are waiting impatiently to see the commitments to judicial reform, which President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Justice Minister Adel Nassar made, come to fruition. The judiciary has deteriorated over the last several years, amidst delays in passing a judicial independence law, proposed in 2018, and the hurdles to judicial appointments placed by former President Michel Aoun five years ago, against the backdrop of political interests. These failures have hindered the good functioning of justice, eroded public trust and jeopardized the rule of law and institutions.
