The 'popular funerals' for Hassan Nasrallah, former Hezbollah leader, and Hashem Safieddine, the party's former president of the executive council, will take place on Feb. 23, 2025. Nasrallah, who was assassinated on Sept. 27, 2024, and his designated successor, killed between the night of Oct. 3-4, 2024, during massive Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs, will be memorialized after nearly five months. Their deaths occurred amid the war between Hezbollah and Israel, which began in October 2023.This unusually long delay in holding their funerals stems largely from the continuation of the large-scale conflict, which only saw a still fragile cease-fire take effect on Nov. 27, 2024.
