Government formation: In the final stretch, barring last-minute hurdles
After resolving the issue of Lebanese Forces representation, Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam’s government still faces obstacles that could be settled quickly.

While everything pointed to the new government being unveiled on Wednesday, the latest meeting between President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam did not lead to the formation of the ministerial team.“There are still points that need to be settled,” Salam said as he left the presidential palace.Sources close to him remain hopeful that the Cabinet will be finalized “by Thursday or Friday at the latest.” The remaining hurdles include deciding on the fifth Shiite minister — whom Aoun and Salam insist on appointing in exchange for granting the Finance Ministry to the Amal-Hezbollah alliance — as well as resolving issues related to the representation of the National Moderation bloc and the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM).
