Joseph Aoun wishes Trump 'full success' and hopes for a boost in Lebanese-American relations

The Lebanese President Joseph Aoun congratulated his American counterpart Donald Trump on Monday, the day of Trump's inauguration. In a statement issued by the Baabda presidential palace, the head of state expressed his "certainty" that Trump's rise to power "will give a new impulse to Lebanese-American relations."

"I wish you full success in governing your friendly country, towards more progress and prosperity," said Aoun. "I am certain that your presence in the supreme magistracy will give a new impulse to Lebanese-American relations and will result in a common desire to strengthen and develop them in all areas," he added, addressing Trump. "Particularly in the fact that you stand alongside Lebanon and continue to support it in its accession to stability, sovereignty, and rebirth after the difficult circumstances it has gone through. Your friendly country has played a notable role in ending this difficult phase and transitioning to a new horizon of security and tranquility."

Aoun's election by MPs was supported by the countries of the Quintet involved in the Lebanese dossier: the United States, France, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
