The International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, announced in a statement released on Tuesday that its president, Nawaf Salam, has resigned after being appointed to form a new government in Lebanon.

"Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice, has resigned from his position as a member of the Court effective today, Jan. 14, 2025," the ICJ statement highlighted, noting that his term as a member and president of the Court was due to expire on Feb. 5, 2027.

"It will be up to the Security Council to set the date for the election, by the General Assembly and the Security Council, of the new member of the Court," the statement added. The term of the newly elected member of the Court will expire on the date when Judge Salam's term was supposed to end.

The ICJ specified that Salam became a member of the Court on Feb. 6, 2018, and was elected president on Feb. 6, 2024. Before that, he served as ambassador and permanent representative of Lebanon to the U.N. in New York from July 2007 to December 2017.

Salam was appointed Prime Minister following binding parliamentary consultations, a few days after the election of the head of state, the commander-in-chief of the Lebanese Army, General Joseph Aoun. Speaking from Beirut after returning from The Hague, Salam stated on Tuesday that he was reaching out to all political parties to help "save" crisis-hit Lebanon before organizing talks to form a government.
